“Gran, you told Kate to trust me to make the right decision. What’s changed?”

Kate frowned. “Yeah, Gran. What’s up? Now I’m thinking we need to take her with us when we leave.”

“I just want her to be cautious, sweetie. That’s all.” Gran turned back to Megan. “You will, won’t you?”

The worry in Gran’s eyes didn’t sit well with her. “Yes. I promise.”

Luke wasn’t dangerous, at least not with her, though overprotective, possessive, and controlling—he was all that and more with her for sure.

Gran took out her pocket watch, an oddity for a woman to carry but something she’d done for as long as Megan could remember. “Oh, my. It’s almost noon.” She stuffed the watch back into her jeans. “Nightmare is going to be stomping the ground if I don’t get him his food.”

Kate stood up. “Give your sister a hug.”

Megan jumped up and wrapped her arms around Kate. “Thank you for being concerned about me, sis.”

  “Always will be. Always.”

“Let me wash these dishes before we go,” Gran offered.

“No. It’ll take me less than five minutes to clean up. You go and feed your horse.” Megan would be sure to give the beast some sugar cubes the next time she saw him. She owed Nightmare that much, at least. If he hadn’t panicked in the woods, she would’ve never met Luke.

“Don’t forget, sis, that my wedding shower starts at ten tomorrow morning. I want you next to me the whole time.”

  “Why?”

“To defend me from those silly, embarrassing games everyone will insist on playing.”

“You mean the kind of games where they put toilet paper on the bride-to-be?”

  “Ridiculous.”

Megan smiled. “But you’re normally the first to insist about such games at showers.”

“So? I wasn’t the one getting married at those parties.”

  “I’ll protect you, sis.”

  “You better.”

Gran interjected, “Bring Luke with you, sweetie.”

“Is the shower for men, too?” Megan asked.

Kate laughed. “Rance and Troy urged me to include the males. I think they just wanted to be there to act as my personal bodyguards. What the hell can happen at a shower that I need protection from?”

Megan pointed out, “A toilet paper dress, for one.”

Kate shook her index finger at her. “Take my advice. If you haven’t fallen completely for Luke, run. Run fast. These shifter men can be domineering and smothering at times.”

“I’m learning that, but it is too late for me, Kate,” she confessed. Nothing felt more true to her in all her life than how she felt for Luke. “I love him.”

  Chapter Ten

Megan finished drying the tea dishes with a little towel she’d found in a drawer. Of everything in Luke’s cabin, this was the only item that had any color. To get a better look at it, she held it up to the light that was above the sink. Lovely yellow roses were printed on the soft fabric, causing her to smile.

“That was my mom’s, little trespasser.”

Startled by Luke’s words and sudden appearance, Megan dropped the cloth. It landed on the floor, and she reached to pick it up. “I’m sorry, Luke.”

“Shh. Don’t worry about that, sweetheart.” He carried Kate’s spell book in his hand. He set it on the counter and came up behind her, still naked from shifting earlier.

“Luke, thank you for getting the book for me.” She stood up, and his hands came around her shoulders.

“You’re welcome.” He kissed her neck. “My mom would’ve liked you. Dad, too.”

She was thrilled that he was actually letting her take a peek into his secret pain, but only a peek. “Tell me about them.”

He stroked her hair gently. “I can’t. Not just yet, Megan.”

The pain she saw in his eyes melted her. “But someday, you promise?”

His lips curled up. “You’re going to be quite the handful for me.”

  “You don’t even know.”

“These clothes were for your guests. When it’s just us, I want you out of them.” He removed her top and bra. Megan closed her eyes, allowing him to undress her without resistance. “I plan on pushing you to the very limit, sweetheart.”

“Well, then brace yourself. I plan on doing the same for you, too.” She took a deep breath and then continued. “My sister’s wedding shower is tomorrow morning. I want you to go with me.”

“Megan, I can’t go.” He cupped her breasts with his large hands, sending tingles through her body.

  “Can’t or won’t?” she pressed.

“Doesn’t matter.” He leaned down and removed her shoes. Then he helped her out of her jeans, leaving her with only her panties to wear. “There’s more. I don’t want you to go either.”

Her jaw dropped. “That doesn’t make sense, Luke. She’s my sister.”

Luke moved his hands down her curves. “And you saw her today. I know you don’t understand, but I’m asking you to not go.”

Something in his voice told her that if she left, he truly would suffer for it. Was he afraid she wouldn’t come back? “Tell me why. Make me understand.”

“I can’t, Megan. I’m not sure I even know why. It’s nuts to you, I’m sure. Hell, it’s nuts to me, too.” His mouth came down on her neck, painting little kisses on her tender skin. His lips worked her into a craze, making it hard for her to concentrate.

“Try, Luke. Please help me to understand.” Megan caught a glance at his hardening cock, and her breath caught in her chest.

“All I can say is that before you, I felt dead inside. You’ve changed everything for me, Megan.” His hands worked gently on her breasts, causing her nipples to extend and tingle. “Now that I have you, I won’t risk losing you.”

Attempting to push back the rising urges Luke was calling forth, Megan took a deep breath and looked long and hard at him. “I understand that being around people is hard for you. You’ve been hiding out in this cabin for God knows how long, but if you’ll just take that first step…”

“I’m not big on talk, little trespasser. I communicate better with my hands. Turn around and lean forward with your hands on the counter.”

Though her pussy had started aching the minute he told her to turn around, Megan wasn’t about to give up. “But I want to discuss this more.”

He pinched her nipples, causing her to yelp. “Turn around.”

I bet Luke thinks he can get me to forget about Kate’s party. Not a chance. “I will if you promise to keep talking.”

As he continued to softly rub her breasts, Luke’s unblinking eyes fixed on her. She tried to keep her head, but his fingers and stare were quickly making that impossible.

  “Turn. Around. Now.”

“Please, Luke.” She turned around, placing her hands on the counter as he’d instructed her to do. Clearly, he was trying to distract her with sex so he wouldn’t have to answer her questions. Well, she was ready to go the distance with him and prove him wrong.

“I like the sound of begging on your pretty lips. Spread your legs for me, little trespasser,” he commanded.

Unable to resist him, she obeyed. “Do you want to make me happy, cowboy?”

“More than anything.” Luke’s hands stroked her thighs slowly, causing her desire to stir. “When I touch you like this…does it make you happy?”

  “Yes. So much. But—”

“And this.” She felt him feather a kiss on the small of her back. “You like that?”

  She sighed. “Oh, yes.”

“What about this, little trespasser?” He pulled her panties down to her ankles, and then he nipped at her ass cheeks, making her pussy moisten.

  “Yes, Luke. I love it.”

“Pleasuring you to the edge of sanity will be my joy each and every day from now on.”

Her arousal and want expanded. Stimulated beyond measure, she moaned as one of his hands fingered her ripe pussy’s fold
s and the other held her in place by the waist.

Their talk about the party would have to wait. Later, he would have to face her questions head-on. For now, the only thing she could concentrate on was his touch. Leaning forward even more, she pressed back into the hand on her mound.

He got down on his knees in between her legs. “You’ve got the sweetest little cunt I’ve ever seen, little trespasser.” His hot breath skated across her pussy, sending a steady pulse to her clit.

His tongue darted over her puffy mound, rousing a thirst in her that needed to be quenched by his cock inside her. Feeling him spread her folds with his thumbs, her body began to vibrate from head to toe but especially in her pussy, where his mouth lingered on her.

“I love your cream, sweetheart.” He growled.

Megan moaned as his amazing tongue swept across her mound, and she felt more liquid seep from between her legs. Her clit ached, driving her mad with want. She needed what Luke had to give. More than that, she needed him.

With skill beyond measure, Luke worked her into a total frenzy. He clipped her tiny hood with his tongue and pierced her pussy with his fingers. His rhythmic licks had her gasping and dizzy. With each stroke of his tongue on her pussy, her sensations intensified.

His fingers thrust deeper into her, but the only thing that would truly satisfy her want was much bigger and harder. “Please, Luke. Fuck me.”

“Your pleasure is my command, sweetheart.” He hoisted her up in his arms and carried her to the bed.

When he placed her on the mattress, she looked up at Luke. His eyes were filled with a hunger that might’ve frightened her before, but now it only enflamed her already-hot want.

“God, you are beautiful.” He cupped her chin with one hand and tugged on her hair with the other. Then he kissed her deeply, sending a clear, unspoken message—you are mine.

He placed his legs between hers, spreading her wide. She felt his hands move to her sides and in a single, powerful thrust, he was inside her body, splitting her pussy, driving her wild.

“You’re so tight, little trespasser. So fucking good.” Luke’s cock pounded deep into her.

Crazed with searing desire and sizzling sensations, Megan clawed at his chest as his dick hit the spot inside her channel.

“Mine,” he growled, increasing the speed of the thrusts of his cock into her.

Her clit ached, and her pussy clenched. Having him inside her, filling every inch, made her burn and glow. Her lips vibrated and tingled as tiny little gasps escaped her mouth. Riding the climax he’d given her, Megan’s womb clenched and she screamed.

Luke’s body stiffened as he slammed into her one last time. Once again, but this time with a loud shout, he proclaimed, “You are mine!”

“I am yours, cowboy, and you are mine.”

Megan slipped from the bed and was glad that Luke didn’t stir. They’d made love for hours before dropping off to sleep. Between each orgasm, she’d tried to get him talking again. But instead of answering her questions, he would start another round of kisses and caresses.

She walked to the sink and filled a glass with water from the faucet. Megan looked back at the man who had captured all of her heart.

Even though it would be difficult to explain to Kate and Gran, Megan would not be attending the shower. She couldn’t bear adding to Luke’s suffering and pain. In time, she hoped he would soften his possessive nature with her. But how?

Sipping the water in the glass, Megan spotted the spell book that Luke had returned to her earlier. Could her answer be in there?

  * * * *

“When he was only ten, Luke jumped in the river and got bitten by a poisonous snake.” His mother’s voice rolled in his mind.

“He’s always been a tough one his whole life,” his dad added.

Luke woke up slowly, longing for more of the gentle voices of his parents that had come with that dream. Usually, his only visits from them came in nightmares, reenactments of the accident, again and again.

He’d been furious with his dad for not letting him drive as punishment for not finishing his homework. He’d yelled at his father about the injustice of his decision from the moment they’d left their land and had kept on yelling during the trip. His anger had seemed so valid to him back then. Now, he knew it for what it really was—a selfish teenager’s rant about needing experience behind the wheel so he could have a chance of getting a license.

The argument had escalated until his dad had become so distracted, he’d driven onto the gravel on the shoulder of the road then overcorrected his swerve to get them back on the pavement. He drove them off a cliff and into the river below. Luke had shifted into his wolf body. Though both his parents were shifters like him, they’d failed to transform into their wolf shapes in time to escape their deaths.

When the members of the tribe reached out to him to console and help him, he’d pushed them away, knowing he didn’t deserve their kindness. All he’d wanted was to be left alone. That was until his mate showed up on his property.

Luke clenched his jaw as the memory of the night he’d caused his parents’ death flattened him out.

Megan deserved to know the truth of the evil he’d caused. But if she knew, she would certainly leave him. That would destroy him even more than losing his parents had done. He just couldn’t bring himself to tell her.

“Why is he so closed off to me?” Megan asked.

“It’s not just you, dear. He’s been suffering ever since we died,” his mother answered.

My mother? He wasn’t dreaming. That realization shocked him into total consciousness.

He sat up and looked at Megan. She was sitting in a chair, facing wispy images of his parents.

“Look. He’s awake.” His dad smiled. “Join us, son.”

“What the hell is going on?” His heart pounded in his chest as ancient guilt began to suffocate him. “What have you done, Megan?”

“Luke, relax. Your girlfriend is a pretty impressive witch. She reached through the ether and called us to her.”

His eyes were wider than he thought possible. This was too much to take in. “Is this some kind of trick?”

“No, Luke. I used Kate’s spell book to do this. I wasn’t going for this exactly—”

“What do you mean?” He was rambling but couldn’t help himself. Seeing his parents with Megan was too surreal, too close to his darkness. Once she knew, she would leave him.

“Son, relax. We’re here. I can sense you doubt what you see and hear.” The image of his father smiled broadly. “Am I right?”

“The spell I invoked was actually a truth spell.” Megan stood up and walked to him. “I wanted to know the truth about why you had trouble with me going to Kate’s shower. Voilà. Instead of some disembodied voice telling me what I desired, your parents showed up to fill me in.” She sat down beside him on the bed and took his hands.

He looked back at his parents, still floating by the table. “Is it really you?”

His mother’s eyes sparkled brightly, just like he remembered them. “Yes, honey.”

“I’m sorry, Luke. I didn’t mean to open up this can of worms.”

He closed his eyes and shook his head. “I thought I’d never see them again. I’m the reason they’re dead, Megan. I caused it. I did it.”

“Shh, Luke.” She put her arm around him. “That isn’t what happened at all. Ask them.”

He glanced up at his parents. Their arms were around each other.

“Son, we’ve been watching you since we left. You’ve been carrying that crushing guilt for too long.”

“But I killed you,” he choked out.

“You didn’t. It was an accident. That’s all.”

His mother’s spirit floated next to him. He could actually feel her hand as she cupped his chin. “Your father and I passed on together, Luke. And though I wish we could’ve been with you to help you, we have been together ever since.”

  His dad’s spirit c
ame up behind his mother’s. “We will never be apart, son. Ever. Now you have a chance to embrace a beautiful woman. Honor our memory by living, Luke.”

The images of his parents began to fade.

  “I will.”

“I love you, son.” His dad smiled.

His mother kissed his cheek, and he felt a tingle where her spirit lips touched him. “I love you, Luke. We’ll always be close. Take good care of him, Megan.”

“I will,” she said, tears rolling down her cheeks.

As the images of his parents faded out completely, Luke pulled Megan close. She had healed his pain and brought light into his world. She was his mate, his true love, and the woman he would spend the rest of his life with.

  “I love you, Megan.”

  Chapter Eleven

Megan opened her eyes and saw the warm glow of sunbeams coming in from the cabin’s windows. Exhausted by the conjuring of Luke’s parents, she’d quickly fallen asleep in his arms. The next time her grandmother visited the cabin, Megan would ask her if the magic tea they’d sipped might’ve been the cause that turned the truth spell she’d tried to cast into a more powerful spell that brought forth the departed. It wasn’t something that she wanted to try again.

Luke wasn’t in the bed with her. In fact, he wasn’t in the cabin. On his pillow was a note for her and the keys to his truck.

  Sweetheart,

Have fun at your sister’s shower.

  Love,

  Luke

Megan’s heart flip-flopped. She was the luckiest woman in the world to have Luke, a man who loved her beyond anything she’d ever known possible. And she loved him. Kissing the note from Luke, she grabbed the keys.
